Saint Trophimus of Arles

Who was Saint Trophimus of Arles?

Trophimus is honored as the first bishop of Arles, in Provence. According to Saint Gregory of Tours, he was one of seven bishops sent from Rome to preach the Gospel in Gaul in the middle of the third century. A later tradition identified him with the Trophimus who traveled with Saint Paul, mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. The Church of Arles grew from his work into one of the most important sees of ancient Gaul.

Feast day and traditions

The Romanesque Cathedral of Saint-Trophime in Arles, with its famous carved portal and cloister, is dedicated to him and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Saint Trophimus, first shepherd of Arles, help us share the joy of the Gospel with people who have never heard it. Amen.
