Optional memorial December 31Pope

Saint Sylvester I

Pope when the Roman persecutions ended and the first great basilicas of Rome were built.

Maso di Banco, Pope Saint Sylvester's Miracle (taming the dragon), c. 1340 · Bardi di Vernio Chapel, Santa Croce, Florence (public domain)

Who was Saint Sylvester I?

Sylvester was Pope from 314 to 335, just after Emperor Constantine granted freedom to the Church. During his time the first great Roman basilicas were built, including Saint John Lateran and the first Saint Peter's, and the Council of Nicaea (325) gave us the Creed. Many stories told about him are legend.

St. Sylvester, as this year ends I thank God for all His gifts. Pray for me in the year to come. Amen.
