Who was Saint Virgil of Salzburg?

Virgil, in Irish Fergal (c. 700–784), was a learned monk from Ireland who came to Bavaria around 743 at the invitation of Duke Odilo. He became abbot of Saint Peter's in Salzburg and later its bishop, building the first cathedral and bringing there the relics of Saint Rupert. He sent missionaries to the Slavic peoples of Carinthia, in present-day Austria and Slovenia, earning the title "Apostle of Carinthia." A keen student of geography, he was accused before the pope of teaching odd ideas about the world, but he kept his good name and was canonized in 1233.
