Saint Andrew the Apostle

The fisherman who was first to follow Jesus and brought his brother Peter to Him.

Jusepe de Ribera, Saint Andrew, c. 1630–32 · Museo del Prado, Madrid (public domain)

Who was Saint Andrew the Apostle?

Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida and a disciple of John the Baptist. When John pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God, Andrew followed Him and ran to tell his brother Simon Peter: "We have found the Messiah." He brought the boy with five loaves and two fish to Jesus. Tradition says he preached in Greece and was crucified in Patras on an X-shaped cross.

Feast day and traditions

November 30 is Saint Andrew's Day, Scotland's national day, and his X-shaped cross is the saltire on the Scottish flag. Advent begins on the Sunday closest to his feast, and many families start the Saint Andrew Christmas Novena today, praying it 15 times a day until Christmas.

Prayer

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen. (St. Andrew Christmas Novena)

Novena

To pray a novena that ends on the eve of the feast, begin on November 21 and finish on November 29.
