Saint Saturninus
Popular devotion November 29Bishop and martyr

Saint Saturninus

First bishop of Toulouse, martyred by being tied to a bull.

Saint Saturninus, miniature from Jean de Vignay's Légende dorée, 14th century · Bibliothèque nationale de France (public domain)

Who was Saint Saturninus?

Saturninus, called Sernin in France, was sent from Rome around 250 to preach in Gaul and became the first bishop of Toulouse. When he refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods, he was tied to a bull and dragged to his death. The great Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse holds his relics, and the church of Notre-Dame du Taur marks where the bull stopped.
