Who was Saint Malachy of Armagh?

Malachy O'Morgair was born in Armagh around 1094. As priest, bishop and finally archbishop of Armagh, he worked to reform the Irish Church, restoring the sacraments, Christian marriage and the Roman liturgy, and he brought the Cistercians to Ireland, founding Mellifont Abbey in 1142. On a journey to Rome he died at Clairvaux on November 2, 1148, in the arms of Saint Bernard, who wrote his life. In 1190 he became the first Irish saint to be formally canonized by a pope.

Feast day and traditions

Saint Bernard buried him in his own habit at Clairvaux. The famous "Prophecy of the Popes" attributed to him appeared only in the 16th century and is not considered his work.
