Saint Leonard of Noblac
Popular devotion November 6Hermit

Saint Leonard of Noblac

A Frankish nobleman turned hermit, remembered as the patron of prisoners and of women in labor.

Correggio, Saints Peter, Martha, Mary Magdalene and Leonard, c. 1515 · Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (public domain)

Who was Saint Leonard of Noblac?

According to tradition, Leonard lived in 6th-century Gaul and left the royal court to live as a hermit near Limoges. The king granted him the right to free prisoners he judged worthy, and he founded a monastery at Noblac, now Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, a stop on the pilgrim road to Santiago.

Feast day and traditions

Many medieval churches in England are dedicated to him. In Bavaria, the Leonhardifahrt procession of decorated horses at Bad Tölz is still held around his feast. He is one of the saints traditionally invoked by expectant mothers.
