Who was Saints Zechariah and Elizabeth?

Zechariah was a priest of the Temple and Elizabeth a relative of the Virgin Mary. Luke's Gospel tells how the angel Gabriel announced the birth of their son in their old age. When Mary visited, the baby leapt in Elizabeth's womb and she greeted her: "Blessed are you among women." Many popular calendars keep them on November 5; the current Roman Martyrology lists them on September 23.

Feast day and traditions

Their words are prayed every day. Elizabeth's greeting is part of the Hail Mary, and Zechariah's song of praise, the Benedictus, is sung each morning in the Liturgy of the Hours. Elizabeth is often invoked by couples hoping for a child.
