Saint Hubert of Liège

Bishop of Maastricht and Liège and the beloved patron of hunters.

Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens, The Vision of Saint Hubert, c. 1617 · Museo del Prado, Madrid (public domain)

Who was Saint Hubert of Liège?

Hubert was a nobleman of the Frankish court in the late 7th century. According to tradition, while he was hunting on a Good Friday a stag appeared to him with a shining crucifix between its antlers, and a voice called him to conversion. He became a disciple of Saint Lambert, succeeded him as bishop of Maastricht around 705, and later moved the see to Liège, where he evangelized the Ardennes. He died in 727; November 3 recalls the translation of his relics.
