Who was Saint Emilian of La Cogolla?

Emilian (Millán) was born in 473 in La Rioja, Spain, and worked as a shepherd until, around the age of twenty, he left everything to live as a hermit in the mountains. After many years of solitude the bishop ordained him priest of Berceo, but he gave away so much of the church's goods to the poor that he was removed, and he returned to his hermitage, where disciples gathered around him. He died in 574, at the age of about 101, and Saint Braulio of Zaragoza wrote his life.

Feast day and traditions

The monasteries of Suso and Yuso at San Millán de la Cogolla, a UNESCO World Heritage site, keep his memory. There monks wrote the "Glosas Emilianenses," among the oldest known written words in Spanish, and he is honored as a patron of Castile.
