Portrait of Pope Saint Damasus I (public domain)

Who was Saint Damasus I?

Damasus was Pope from 366 to 384, after a disputed election. He asked his secretary, Saint Jerome, to revise the Latin Bible, the work that became the Vulgate, used by the Church for over a thousand years. He restored the catacombs and composed verses in honor of the martyrs, carved on marble plaques.

Feast day and traditions

His inscriptions can still be read in the Catacomb of Saint Callixtus in Rome, which is why archaeologists consider him one of their own.
