The story

The Book of Esther tells how Haman, the minister of King Ahasuerus, cast lots (purim) to choose a day to destroy all the Jews of the Persian empire. Queen Esther, encouraged by her cousin Mordechai, risked her life to speak to the king, and the plan was turned upside down.

Purim falls on the 14th of Adar (the 15th in Jerusalem, Shushan Purim). The day before is the Fast of Esther.

How it is observed

The Megillah (the scroll of Esther) is read in the evening and again in the morning; every time Haman's name is said, children make noise with graggers. There are four special mitzvot: hearing the Megillah, sending gifts of food to friends (mishloach manot), giving gifts to the poor (matanot la'evyonim) and a festive meal.

Blessings and prayers

1 · Before reading the Megillah

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu al mikra megillah.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to read the Megillah.

2 · For the miracles

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, she'asah nisim la'avoteinu bayamim hahem bazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days, at this season.

3 · Shehecheyanu

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, shehecheyanu v'kiy'manu v'higiyanu lazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us and brought us to this season.

Reading and psalm

The Book of Esther is read in full, and Al HaNissim is added to the prayers. Hallel is not said, because the reading of the Megillah takes its place.
