The story

Besides Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av, the Jewish calendar has minor fasts that last from dawn until nightfall: the Fast of Gedaliah (3 Tishrei), the 10th of Tevet, when the siege of Jerusalem began, the Fast of Esther (13 Adar, before Purim) and the 17th of Tammuz, when the walls of Jerusalem were breached. On the day before Passover there is also the Fast of the Firstborn.

How it is observed

Adults in good health do not eat or drink from dawn until nightfall. Special prayers are added, including Aneinu, "answer us", and the Torah is read in the afternoon. Pregnant and nursing women and people who are ill are generally exempt.

Blessings and prayers

1 · Aneinu (said in the prayers)

עֲנֵנוּ ה׳ עֲנֵנוּ בְּיוֹם צוֹם תַּעֲנִיתֵנוּ

Aneinu Adonai, aneinu b'yom tzom ta'aniteinu.

Answer us, Lord, answer us on the day of our fast.

Reading and psalm

The prayer Aneinu and the Selichot (penitential prayers) are recited, and the passage of Exodus 32–34, with the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, is read.
