Saint Stephen
Feast December 26First martyr

Saint Stephen

One of the first seven deacons and the first Christian martyr, who died forgiving those who stoned him.

Carlo Crivelli, Saint Stephen (Demidoff Altarpiece), 1476 · National Gallery, London (public domain)

Who was Saint Stephen?

Stephen was chosen by the Apostles as one of the first seven deacons to serve the poor in Jerusalem. "Full of grace and power", he preached boldly. Brought before the council, he saw heaven open and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He was stoned to death praying, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." A young man named Saul, the future Saint Paul, looked on.

Feast day and traditions

In Britain and Ireland December 26 is Saint Stephen's Day, also known as Boxing Day. In Ireland "Wren Boys" go door to door in costume. The carol Good King Wenceslas tells of a king who went out "on the Feast of Stephen" to help a poor man.
