Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The icon originated in Crete in the 14th century and is one of the most beloved icons of the Catholic Church. The original wooden icon was brought to Rome in the 15th century and was placed in the Church of San Matteo. In 1866, the Redemptorist Fathers of the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome received the icon and spread its veneration throughout the world.
