Cleaning & Caring for Your Jewelry: Preserving the Beauty of Your 18K Gold Pieces
Cleaning & Caring for Your Jewelry
Preserving the Beauty of Your 18K Gold Pieces
At Amalia Jewelry, we want your 18K gold jewelry to stay beautiful for as long as possible. Fine jewelry is delicate and should always be handled, worn, and stored with care.
Enamel, pearls, stones, and decorative finishes are not guaranteed against wear, loss, or damage. Enamel jewelry is lead-free; however, enamel may wear off, chip, fade, or become damaged when exposed to chlorine, seawater, pools, shampoo, conditioner, soap, body creams, sunscreen, perfumes, lotions, sweat, cleaning products, chemicals, or other substances.
We recommend having children’s jewelry cleaned by a professional jeweler who understands both hard and soft enamel. If a jeweler is not knowledgeable about enamel, they may accidentally cause damage. You may also request a cleaning from us by emailing info@amaliajewelry.com.
If you need a half pair of earrings or replacement earring backs, please email your request to info@amaliajewelry.com.
Cleaning Instructions
If you prefer not to take your jewelry to a jeweler or send it to Amalia Jewelry, you may clean it carefully using the following steps:
-
Soak your gold jewelry in warm, mild soapy water.
-
Gently clean it with a very soft brush.
-
Rinse it with clean water.
-
Blot it dry with a soft cloth.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Keep your jewelry away from harsh chemicals such as chlorine, bleach, household cleaners, perfumes, lotions, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, soaps, and other chemical products. These substances may damage the gold, enamel, finishes, pearls, stones, or other decorative details.
Store Properly
Store your 18K gold jewelry in a soft pouch or in a separate compartment in a jewelry box to help avoid scratches, dents, tangling, and damage.
Regular Inspection
Periodically inspect your jewelry for loose stones, loose earring backs, worn parts, bending, scratches, dents, or other signs of wear. We recommend having your jewelry professionally checked and cleaned at least once a year.
Avoid Wearing During Certain Activities
Remove your jewelry before swimming, bathing, sleeping, exercising, sports, rough play, heavy manual work, or any activity that may expose the jewelry to impact, pulling, pressure, friction, sweat, water, chemicals, or hard surfaces.
Hollow, Semi-Hollow, and Solid Jewelry
Some of our jewelry pieces, including certain medals, crosses, pendants, charms, and many of our baby and kids’ jewelry, may be hollow or semi-hollow. These pieces are made of 18K gold, meaning the gold used to make the piece is 18K gold. Hollow and semi-hollow pieces are not filled with any other material.
A product description may state “18K gold” or “18K solid gold” to describe the gold material. However, this does not always mean the piece is solid all the way through unless the product description specifically states that the item is “solid throughout” or “fully solid.” Hollow and semi-hollow pieces may have empty space inside or may be constructed with less gold than fully solid pieces. Because of this, they are lighter in weight and usually cost less than fully solid pieces of the same size.
All fine jewelry, including fully solid 18K gold jewelry, can scratch, dent, bend, or become damaged with use, impact, pressure, pulling, friction, drops, chemicals, or improper care. Hollow and semi-hollow jewelry is generally more delicate than fully solid jewelry and may dent, bend, crush, or become damaged more easily.
Baby and Kids’ Jewelry
Baby and kids’ jewelry should always be worn under adult supervision. Jewelry should be removed before bathing, swimming, sleeping, sports, rough play, or any activity that may expose the jewelry to pulling, impact, pressure, chemicals, water, or hard surfaces.
Baby and kids’ jewelry, including ID bracelets, can scratch, dent, bend, or become damaged during normal use, especially if a child crawls, plays, or rubs the jewelry against hard surfaces while wearing it.
Pools, salt water, shampoo, conditioner, soap, creams, lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, cleaning products, and other chemicals may damage enamel, finishes, stones, pearls, and the jewelry itself.
Earring Backs
Earring backs, including screw backs and other backing styles, are not guaranteed to stay on permanently. They may loosen or come off if a child unscrews them, pulls on them, plays with them, or if they are not checked and tightened regularly.
Customers should check earring backs regularly and make sure they are properly secured before each use.
Questions Before Purchasing
Customers should handle all jewelry with care. If you are unsure whether a specific piece is hollow, semi-hollow, or fully solid throughout, please contact us before purchasing by email, message, or phone so we can provide the most accurate information available for that item.
By following these care instructions, you can help preserve the beauty of your 18K gold jewelry and reduce the risk of wear, scratches, dents, enamel loss, or other damage.
