Who was Saint Simeon of Jerusalem?

Simeon, son of Clopas, was a relative of Jesus; the early historian Hegesippus, quoted by Eusebius, says Clopas was the brother of Saint Joseph. Many scholars identify him with the 'Simon' named among the brethren of the Lord in the Gospel of Mark. He would have known Jesus personally and witnessed the beginnings of the Church.

After the martyrdom of Saint James, the first bishop of Jerusalem, around 62, Simeon was chosen to succeed him. Ancient tradition says he led the Christians out of Jerusalem to Pella before the Romans destroyed the city in 70, and later guided the community after its return. Under the emperor Trajan, around 107, he was denounced as a descendant of David and a Christian. Hegesippus reports that he was tortured for many days and crucified at the age of 120, astonishing everyone by his endurance.

Feast day and traditions

Simeon is honored in both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches as a link between the family of Jesus and the early Church of Jerusalem.

His feast reminds Christians of the Mother Church of Jerusalem and is a good day to pray for Christians in the Holy Land today.
