Who was Saint Joseph Marchand?

Joseph Marchand (1803–1835) was born in Passavant, in eastern France, and joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Ordained in 1829, he was sent to Vietnam, where he ministered to Catholics in the south during the persecution of Emperor Minh Mang. In 1835 he was captured in Saigon, taken north to Huế in a cage and cruelly tortured to make him renounce his faith. He remained faithful and was executed on November 30, 1835.
