Who was Saint Benignus of Armagh?

Benignus (Benen in Irish) was the son of an Irish chieftain in County Meath, baptized by Saint Patrick in the 5th century. According to tradition, the boy was so taken with Patrick that he scattered flowers over him while he slept and begged to follow him, and Patrick took him as a disciple. He became Patrick's companion and the singer of the psalms in his mission, and he later succeeded him as bishop of Armagh. He died in 467.
