Who was Saint Abraham of Kratia?

Abraham was born around 474 in Emesa (Homs), in Syria, and became a monk there as a young man. When raiders scattered his community he went to Constantinople, and at about 26 he was made abbot of a monastery at Kratia in Bithynia, in today's Turkey. Longing for solitude, he slipped away to Palestine, but he was sent back and made bishop of Kratia, which he served for about thirteen years. Around 525 he retired to Palestine again and lived in prayer until his death around 558; his life was written by Cyril of Scythopolis.
