Blessed Urban V
Popular devotion December 19Pope

Blessed Urban V

Benedictine monk and pope who tried to bring the papacy home from Avignon to Rome.

Simone dei Crocifissi, Pope Urban V, c. 1375 · Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna (public domain)

Who was Blessed Urban V?

Guillaume de Grimoard (1310–1370) was a French Benedictine abbot and scholar elected pope in 1362, while the popes lived in Avignon. He kept living as a monk, founded universities and in 1367 became the first pope in about 60 years to return to Rome. Political troubles drew him back to Avignon, where he died. He was beatified in 1870, the only Avignon pope to be beatified.
