Saint Judoc
Popular devotion December 13Priest and hermit

Saint Judoc

Breton prince who gave up a throne to become a priest, pilgrim and hermit on the coast of northern France.

Old French holy card of Saint Josse (Judoc) (public domain)

Who was Saint Judoc?

Judoc (Josse) was a son of the Breton king Juthael in the 7th century. When he was asked to rule after his brother Judicael entered a monastery, he refused the crown and went on pilgrimage, and was ordained a priest in Ponthieu, in northern France. He lived for years as a hermit and, according to tradition, made a pilgrimage to Rome. He died around 668 at the place now called Saint-Josse-sur-Mer, where a monastery grew up around his hermitage.

Feast day and traditions

His shrine became a major pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, and his relics were also venerated at Hyde Abbey in Winchester, England. He is often shown as a pilgrim with a staff and a crown at his feet, and the names Joyce and Jodocus come from him.
