Saint John of the Cross
Memorial December 14Priest and Doctor of the Church

Saint John of the Cross

Spanish Carmelite mystic and poet who wrote about the "dark night of the soul".

Attributed to Francisco de Zurbarán, Saint John of the Cross, 1656 (public domain)

Who was Saint John of the Cross?

John of the Cross (1542–1591) grew up poor in Spain and became a Carmelite friar. With Saint Teresa of Ávila he worked to reform the order, and opponents of the reform locked him for nine months in a tiny cell in Toledo, where he composed the Spiritual Canticle. His works, including The Dark Night and The Living Flame of Love, describe the soul's journey to union with God.
