Saint Crispina

Wealthy North African wife and mother who was martyred for refusing to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods.

Procession of Virgin Martyrs with Saint Crispina (center), mosaic, 6th century · Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna (public domain)

Who was Saint Crispina?

Crispina was a noblewoman of Thagaste, in present-day Algeria, the same town where Saint Augustine would later be born. During the persecution of Diocletian she was brought before the proconsul Anulinus at Theveste and ordered to sacrifice to the gods. The record of her trial shows her calm and firm answers: she would worship only the one true God. She was beheaded on December 5, 304, and Saint Augustine later praised her courage in his sermons.
