Saint Ambrose
Memorial December 7Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Saint Ambrose

Governor of Milan who was chosen bishop before he was baptized, and who baptized Saint Augustine.

Ambrogio Bergognone, Saint Ambrose with Saints, c. 1514 (public domain)

Who was Saint Ambrose?

Ambrose (c. 340–397) was the Roman governor of Milan. When the bishop died, the crowd shouted "Ambrose for bishop!" Though still preparing for baptism, within a week he was baptized, ordained and made bishop. A great preacher and hymn writer, he made Emperor Theodosius do public penance and baptized Saint Augustine in 387.

Feast day and traditions

Legend says bees landed on his mouth when he was a baby, a sign of his "honey-tongued" preaching, which is why beekeepers and candlemakers claim him as patron. Milan celebrates its patron with the Oh bej! Oh bej! Christmas market.

Prayer

St. Ambrose, teacher of the faith, help me speak the truth with courage and kindness. Amen.

Novena
