Saint Leo the Great
Memorial November 10Pope and Doctor of the Church

Saint Leo the Great

Pope who defended the truth that Christ is fully God and fully man, and who faced down Attila the Hun.

Raphael, The Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila, 1514 · Stanza di Eliodoro, Vatican Museums (public domain)

Who was Saint Leo the Great?

Leo was Pope from 440 to 461. His letter on the two natures of Christ, known as the Tome, was accepted by the Council of Chalcedon in 451 with the cry "Peter has spoken through Leo!" In 452 he met Attila the Hun and persuaded him not to attack Rome, and in 455 he limited the damage when the Vandals sacked the city.

Feast day and traditions

His Christmas sermon, "Christian, remember your dignity", is read on Christmas Day in the Office of Readings. He is one of only two popes widely called "the Great".
