Saint Josaphat

Ukrainian archbishop who gave his life for the unity of Eastern and Western Christians.

Anonymous, Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych (public domain)

Who was Saint Josaphat?

Josaphat Kuntsevych (c. 1580–1623) was a Basilian monk of the Byzantine rite united with Rome and became Archbishop of Polotsk. He preached, cared for the poor and worked for the union of Orthodox and Catholic Christians. He was killed by a mob in Vitebsk in 1623 and was the first saint of the Eastern Churches canonized by Rome.

Feast day and traditions

He is especially honored by Ukrainian Greek Catholics in the United States; the Ukrainian Catholic cathedral in Parma, Ohio, bears his name, as does the Basilica of Saint Josaphat in Milwaukee. His relics rest in Saint Peter's Basilica.
