Who was Saint Emeric of Hungary?

Emeric (Imre) was born around 1007, the son of King Stephen of Hungary and Blessed Gisela of Bavaria. He was educated by the holy bishop Gerard Sagredo, and his father wrote for him a famous book of advice on how to rule as a Christian king. According to tradition, he lived a life of great purity even in marriage. He was killed in a hunting accident in 1031, before he could take the throne, and was canonized together with his father in 1083.

Feast day and traditions

He is a patron of young people in Hungary, where many churches and schools bear his name. The Italian form of his name, Amerigo, was the name of the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, from whom the Americas take their name.

Prayer

Saint Emeric, you listened to the good advice of your father and lived a pure life; help our young people to follow Christ with all their hearts. Amen.
