Who was Saint Caterina Volpicelli?

Caterina Volpicelli was born in Naples in 1839 into a well-off family and enjoyed music, literature and society life. Guided by a wise priest, she discovered a deep love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After poor health forced her to leave a convent, she founded in 1874 the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart, women who lived consecrated lives while working in the world, and she spread the Apostleship of Prayer throughout Italy. She died in Naples on December 28, 1894, and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.

Feast day and traditions

She also founded orphanages and libraries and organized help for victims of the cholera epidemic of 1884. Her sanctuary of the Sacred Heart in Naples keeps her memory alive.
