Who was Saint Egwin?

Egwin (died 717), of the royal house of Mercia, became the third Bishop of Worcester. Falsely accused, he fastened iron shackles on his own legs, threw the key into the River Avon and set out for Rome; the key was found inside a fish caught in the Tiber, and he was freed of the charges. A vision of the Virgin Mary to a swineherd later showed him where to build Evesham Abbey.
