Saints Flora and Mary of Córdoba

Two young women of Muslim-ruled Córdoba who met in prison and gave their lives for Christ in 851.

Antonio Palomino (attributed), Saint Flora, early 18th century · Main altarpiece, Córdoba Cathedral (public domain)

Who was Saints Flora and Mary of Córdoba?

Flora was the daughter of a Muslim father and a Christian mother, who raised her secretly in the faith; after her father's death her own brother denounced her to the authorities. Mary was the sister of a deacon who had already been martyred, and she felt called to profess her faith openly. The two met in prison, where Saint Eulogius of Córdoba encouraged them with letters and visits. They refused to deny Christ and were beheaded on November 24, 851.

Feast day and traditions

Saint Eulogius, who was martyred himself a few years later, wrote their story. Flora is honored in Córdoba among its martyrs, and many girls in Spain and Latin America carry the names Flora and María.
