Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Optional memorial November 25Virgin and martyr

Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Brilliant young woman of Alexandria who out-argued the emperor's philosophers and was martyred for Christ.

Caravaggio, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, c. 1598 · Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (public domain)

Who was Saint Catherine of Alexandria?

Tradition says Catherine was a learned young noblewoman of Alexandria, Egypt, in the early 4th century. She defended the faith before the emperor and his philosophers, many of whom converted. Condemned to die on a spiked wheel, she was beheaded when the wheel broke. Removed from the calendar in 1969, she was restored by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
