Who was Saint Leopold III of Austria?

Leopold was born in 1073 into the Babenberg family and ruled Austria as margrave from 1095. He married Agnes, daughter of Emperor Henry IV, and they had a large family; according to tradition, eighteen children were born to them. He governed with justice and peace, cared for the poor and founded the abbeys of Klosterneuburg, Heiligenkreuz and Kleinmariazell. In 1125 he refused the imperial crown, and he died in 1136; he was canonized in 1485.

Feast day and traditions

According to tradition, he founded Klosterneuburg where he found his wife's lost veil caught on an elder bush. On his feast, a holiday in Vienna and Lower Austria, people slide down a giant wine barrel at Klosterneuburg Abbey, a custom called "Fasslrutschen."
