Who was Saint Raphael Kalinowski?

Joseph Kalinowski (1835–1907) was an engineer and officer who joined the Polish uprising of 1863. Sentenced to death, he was instead sent to ten years of forced labor in Siberia. Freed, he became a Discalced Carmelite named Raphael and spent long hours hearing confessions. In 1991 he became the first Discalced Carmelite friar canonized since Saint John of the Cross.
