Saint Chrysogonus
Popular devotion November 24Martyr

Saint Chrysogonus

Early martyr of Aquileia whose name is prayed in the Roman Canon of the Mass.

Michele Giambono, Saint Chrysogonus on Horseback, c. 1450 · Church of San Trovaso, Venice (public domain)

Who was Saint Chrysogonus?

Chrysogonus was a Christian martyred at Aquileia, in northern Italy, around 304 during the persecution of Diocletian. Little is known for certain about his life, but his cult spread early to Rome, where a church in Trastevere was dedicated to him by the 5th century. According to a later legend, he was the teacher and spiritual guide of Saint Anastasia, and after long imprisonment he was beheaded and his body thrown into the sea.
