Who was Saint Romaric?

Romaric was a nobleman at the Frankish court of Austrasia in the early 7th century, and his father had been killed in the power struggles of Queen Brunhilda. Moved by the preaching of Saint Amatus, a monk of Luxeuil, he freed his slaves, gave away much of his property and became a monk at Luxeuil. Around 620 he and Amatus founded a double monastery for men and women on his estate in the Vosges, later called Remiremont after him. He succeeded Amatus as abbot and died there in 653.
