Miguel Cabrera, True Portrait of the Venerable Juan Diego, 1751 (public domain)

Who was Saint Juan Diego?

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (1474–1548) was an Indigenous man baptized as an adult. On December 9, 1531, on his way to Mass, the Virgin Mary appeared to him on the hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City, and asked for a church to be built there. On December 12 her image appeared on his tilma, or cloak, before the bishop. He spent the rest of his life caring for her chapel and was canonized on July 31, 2002.
