Frequently asked questions
What is a Hebrew birthday?
It is the anniversary of your birth on the Hebrew calendar: the same Hebrew day and month you were born. Many Jewish families mark it with a blessing, tzedakah (charity) or a moment of study.
Why does it fall on a different date every year?
The Hebrew calendar follows the moon and adds an extra month 7 times every 19 years to stay in season. That is why your Hebrew date moves a few days on the civil calendar each year.
What if I was born at night?
The Jewish day begins at sundown. If you were born after sunset, your Hebrew date is the next day: check "Born after sunset" and the calculator takes it into account.
What if I was born in the month of Adar?
Hebrew leap years have two months of Adar. Someone born in Adar of a regular year celebrates in Adar II; someone born in Adar I or Adar II of a leap year celebrates in that same month. The calculator applies this rule.
How do people celebrate it?
Many families light a candle, give tzedakah, study some Torah or give a meaningful piece of jewelry, such as a Chai or a Star of David.
