Popular devotion November 20King and martyr

Saint Edmund the Martyr

English king killed by Viking invaders for refusing to give up his faith, and England's first patron saint.

Who was Saint Edmund the Martyr?

Edmund (c. 841–869) was King of East Anglia. When the Viking Great Army invaded, he was captured and ordered to renounce Christ and rule under them. He refused, and was tied to a tree, shot with arrows and beheaded. The town of Bury St Edmunds grew up around his shrine.

Feast day and traditions

Before Saint George, Edmund was regarded as the patron saint of England, and there are still campaigns to restore him. Legend says a wolf guarded his head until his people found it.
