Pope Saint Clement I

Fourth bishop of Rome, whose letter to the Corinthians is one of the oldest Christian writings outside the Bible.

Who was Pope Saint Clement I?

Clement led the Church of Rome at the end of the 1st century, after Peter, Linus and Cletus, and ancient writers say he had known the apostles. Around the year 96 he wrote a letter to the Christians of Corinth urging them to end their quarrels and restore peace and order in their community. According to tradition, he was exiled to the Crimea, where he served Christians condemned to work in the mines. Tradition also says he was martyred by being thrown into the sea with an anchor tied to him.
