Memorial November 4Bishop

Saint Charles Borromeo

Archbishop of Milan who renewed the Church after the Council of Trent and stayed with his people through the plague.

Orazio Borgianni, Saint Charles Borromeo, c. 1610–16 · State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (public domain)

Who was Saint Charles Borromeo?

Charles Borromeo (1538–1584) was a nephew of Pope Pius IV and helped bring the Council of Trent to a close. As Archbishop of Milan he founded seminaries, organized catechism classes for children and reformed the clergy. When plague struck Milan in 1576 and the civil authorities fled, he stayed, feeding thousands and caring for the dying.

Feast day and traditions

He is the patron of seminarians, and many seminaries bear his name, including Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia. Catechists often celebrate his feast as their own.

Prayer

St. Charles Borromeo, faithful shepherd, pray for our bishops, priests and seminarians, and help us love the Church. Amen.
