The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary's pure heart, which kept and pondered everything about her Son, honored the day after the Sacred Heart. In 2027: June 5.

Who was The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Saint Luke tells us twice that Mary "kept all these things, pondering them in her heart". Saint John Eudes, in the seventeenth century, was the great promoter of devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. At Fatima in 1917, Our Lady asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart and for the First Saturdays of reparation, and Pope Pius XII consecrated the world to her Immaculate Heart in 1942.

The memorial is celebrated on the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, joining the two Hearts. It is movable: in 2027 it falls on June 5, and in 2028 on June 24.

Feast day and traditions

Many Catholics make the Five First Saturdays asked for at Fatima: confession, Communion, the Rosary and fifteen minutes of meditation in reparation. Families consecrate themselves to the Immaculate Heart, often together with the Sacred Heart.

The Immaculate Heart is usually shown surrounded by roses and pierced by a sword, recalling Simeon's prophecy.

Prayer

Immaculate Heart of Mary, refuge of sinners, I consecrate myself and my family to you. Teach me to keep God's word in my heart as you did, and lead us safely to Jesus. Amen.
