The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their home in Nazareth, the model and protectors of every family. In 2026: December 27.

Who was The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph?

The Gospels tell us little about the hidden years in Nazareth, but enough: Joseph protected the Child and his Mother through the flight to Egypt, the family lived by work and prayer, and when Jesus was found in the Temple he went home and "was obedient to them". God chose to be born and to grow up in a family.

The feast spread in the nineteenth century and was extended to the whole Church in 1921. It is movable: it is celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas, or on December 30 when Christmas falls on a Sunday. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, December 27.

Feast day and traditions

Many parishes bless families and married couples at Mass on this day, and some renew wedding vows. In Latin American homes the Nativity scene stays up, and families pray together before it.

It is a good day to consecrate the family to the Holy Family and to place an image of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in the home.

Prayer

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give you my heart and my family. Make our home a little Nazareth of love, patience and prayer, and keep us united always. Amen.
