Who was Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini?

Frances Cabrini (1850–1917) founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Italy. Pope Leo XIII sent her "not to the East, but to the West", to care for Italian immigrants in New York. Despite her fear of water she crossed the Atlantic many times and founded 67 schools, hospitals and orphanages. She became a US citizen in 1909, died in Chicago and was canonized in 1946.

Feast day and traditions

Her feast on November 13 is a memorial on the US calendar. Pilgrims visit her shrines in Manhattan, where her body rests, in Chicago and in Golden, Colorado. Her life was told in the 2024 film Cabrini.
