The story

Shemini Atzeret, "the eighth day of assembly", comes right after the seven days of Sukkot. The sages compare it to a king who asks his guests to stay one more day with him.

Outside Israel the second day is Simchat Torah, "rejoicing with the Torah": the last portion of Deuteronomy is read and immediately the first chapter of Genesis, because the study of Torah never ends.

How it is observed

On Shemini Atzeret the prayer for rain (Geshem) is said for the coming season in the Land of Israel, and many communities say Yizkor for loved ones. On Simchat Torah all the Torah scrolls are taken out of the ark and carried around the synagogue in seven circles (hakafot) with singing and dancing; children wave flags and everyone is called up to the Torah.

Blessings and prayers

1 · Lighting the holiday candles

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Yom Tov.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the holiday candle.

2 · Shehecheyanu

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, shehecheyanu v'kiy'manu v'higiyanu lazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us and brought us to this season.
