Who was Saint Philogonius of Antioch?

Philogonius was a respected lawyer in Antioch, known for defending the poor and the weak. Although he was a married layman with a daughter, he was chosen bishop of Antioch around 319 because of his upright life. He suffered during the persecution of Emperor Licinius and defended the true faith in Christ at the time the Arian heresy was beginning. He died around 324.

Feast day and traditions

On his feast day in 386, Saint John Chrysostom preached a sermon in his honor, in which he also urged the people of Antioch to prepare for the feast of Christmas, then newly celebrated there.
