Who was Saint Malo?

Malo (Machutus or Maclou) was born in Wales in the 6th century and trained as a monk. According to tradition, he sailed with Saint Brendan the Navigator on his voyages, and on one of them Mass was celebrated on the back of a whale. He settled at Aleth in Brittany, where he preached the Gospel and served as bishop, and is counted among the seven founding saints of Brittany. Facing opposition, he withdrew to the region of Saintes, where he died around 621.
