Who was Saint Guntram?

Guntram was born around 532, a grandson of Clovis, the first Christian king of the Franks. In 561, when the kingdom was divided among the sons of King Clothar I, he received Burgundy, with his capital at Chalon-sur-Saône. His early years were marked by the violence of his age: he put away his first wife and, in anger, had the physicians of his dying queen executed.

In time Guntram repented deeply and did penance for his sins. He became known for his mercy, his care for the sick and the poor, and his efforts to keep peace among his quarrelsome relatives. During a plague he fasted and prayed for his people and gave generously to relieve their suffering. He founded churches and monasteries and supported several Church councils. Saint Gregory of Tours, who knew him, admired his piety. He died at Chalon-sur-Saône on March 28, 592.
