Who was Saint Anysia of Thessalonica?

Anysia was born to a wealthy Christian family in Thessalonica, Greece, and after her parents died she used her inheritance to help the poor and lived a life of prayer. According to tradition, during the persecution under Emperor Maximian, around 304, she was stopped by a soldier while on her way to a Christian gathering. When she refused to go with him to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, he killed her with his sword. Christians of the city later built a chapel over her tomb.
