Who was Saint Albert of Louvain?

Albert (c. 1166–1192) was the son of the Duke of Brabant and was elected bishop of Liège in 1191. Emperor Henry VI refused to accept him and gave the diocese to his own candidate, so Albert traveled to Rome and was confirmed by Pope Celestine III. Unable to enter Liège, he was ordained priest and bishop at Reims, in France. A few weeks later, in November 1192, knights from the emperor's court pretended to be his friends and killed him outside the city.

Feast day and traditions

He was buried in Reims Cathedral, and in 1612 his relics were brought to Brussels by Archduke Albert of Austria, who had chosen him as his patron saint.
